Bulgari is a name that’s long been synonymous with timeless and elegant Italian design.
The luxury brand and fashion house has established itself as a sought-after designer brand that creates impeccable jewelry pieces, fragrances, and accessories.
Even after more than 130 years in the business, Bulgari has gone from strength to strength.
So what makes Bulgari such a coveted designer brand? And are the brand’s offerings worth their luxury price tag?
In this comprehensive Bulgari review, we’ll answer these questions and more.
History of Bulgari
Bulgari is a fashion house that boasts a rich history. Founded in 1884 by Greek silversmith Sotirio Bulgari in Rome, Italy, the brand quickly established a strong reputation for creating dazzling silver ornaments.
Its silver ornaments were a hit with English tourists, who helped to drive the brand’s popularity in its early days.
Bulgari opened its first brick-and-mortar store on the picturesque and bustling street, Via Sistina, in its first year of operation, with other stores soon following.
The brand’s popularity grew to new heights when the founder’s two sons joined the company in the 1920s and suggested pivoting its focus to high jewelry. According to the brand, early high jewelry pieces “reflected the design of traditional French school, incorporating platinum and diamonds with geometric and stylized Art Déco design.”
In the 1940s, the brand's signature “Italian Bvlgari style” was born. Over the next few decades, it continued to push new jewelry design boundaries, crafting more daring, colorful, and bolder creations.
Wishing to capitalize on its growing international fame, Bulgari expanded into Europe and the United States in the early 1970s. Bulgari launched its first watch in 1975 to great success.
Never one to miss an opportunity to flaunt its creative genius, Bulgari continued to innovate and capture the attention of jewelry lovers worldwide by incorporating unconventional materials into their designs throughout the 1980s and 1990s.
In 1992, Bulgari launched its first of many fragrances and four years later established its accessories line.
In 2011, the brand was acquired by the French luxury goods group, LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton.
Today, Bulgari continues its tradition of championing elegant and fearless design and world-class craftsmanship.
Bulgari’s jewelry collections
If you’ve been browsing Bulgari’s fine jewelry for a while, you may have started to notice the same names continuously popping up, such as “Bvlgari Bvlgari,” “B.zero1,” and “Serpenti.”
There's a good reason for this; these names refer to the brand’s jewelry collections.
Likewise to many luxury jewelry brands, the brand has released many jewelry collections connected by a certain theme and aesthetic.
At the time of writing, the brand has seven main jewelry collections available on its website.
To help you wrap your head around what makes each of these unique, we’ve put together the following quick cheat sheet.
High End Jewelry
No Bulgari review would be complete without mentioning the brand’s High End Jewelry collection. The jewelry pieces in this collection represent the crème de la crème of the brand’s jewelry.
The High End Jewelry collection is, in fact, more of an overarching category that houses the brand’s most exclusive (and most expensive!) jewelry.
For example, the current High End Jewelry collection is called theBarocko High Jewelry Collection. With no shortage of pearls, diamonds, and glistening gemstones like rubellites featuring in this collection, it’s not hard to see why these pieces are classed in this category.
So just how much will a jewelry piece from Bulgari’s High End Jewelry collection set you back? We’d love to spill the beans on an exact amount you can expect to spend, but the prices are only available upon application.
Given their couture-esque status, world class craftsmanship, and the selection of high-quality jewels and metals used in each piece, we estimate prices start in the tens of thousands of dollars.
The brand describes its Bvlgari Bvlgari collection as “A contemporary statement of classiness.”
Bvlgari Bvlgari pieces are instantly recognizable by their unique circular logo, which is a nod to the inscriptions found on ancient Roman coins.
The collection is characterized by a playful, fresh, and modern feel, with pieces featuring "a new wave of must-have jewels designed for a generation that does not play by the rules."
The pieces in this collection are geared towards young women who are after informal yet elegant jewelry pieces to accentuate their look.
The brand describes its B.zero1 collection as “An iconic symbol of distinctiveness and self-expression.”
Similar to the Bvlgari Bvlgari collection, B.zero1 is also inspired by Roman history and culture, specifically, the Colosseum.
The pieces in this collection are unashamedly audacious and irreverent. They exude a glam rock vibe that compliments the collection’s overarching “rule-breaking” aesthetic.
As the name suggests, the Serpenti collection is all about showcasing the beauty of serpents. The brand describes it as representing “The art of temptation” with pieces in it said to “revive the exuberance of the Roman Dolce Vita.”
Serpent symbolism has a long history in the Bulgari fashion house, first making an appearance in Bulgari’s jewelry collection in the 1960s.
The brand has continually evolved the Serpenti collection over the last six decades to ensure it remains relevant to the aesthetics of the day.
The Serpenti jewelry collection’s current iteration is equal parts flashy and sensual, with the snake motif featuring prominently in each jewelry piece.
According to Bulgari, the Divas' Dream collection "seals the perfect encounter between the aura of a diva and the unrestrained glamour of Rome."
The pieces in this collection are fashion-forward and don’t hold back on incorporating striking colors. That said, the designs have a certain sense of maturity to them.
Contrasting to the Divas’ Dream collection is the
Fiorever collection, with its unapologetic playfulness and youthfulness.
Described by the brand as “The everlasting charm of a floral icon,” this collection captivates with its sparkling diamond floral motifs.
Save the Children
The Save the Children collection is a charity-focused collaboration betweenBulgari and the aid and development agency, Save the Children.
If the pieces in this collection look familiar, that’s because they take inspiration from the B.zero1 collection.
Part of the proceeds from the sale of each piece are donated to Save the Children. Since its launch in 2009, the Save the Children collection has raised over $80 million for the charitable agency.
Supporting charitable causes is also something we value atBlush and Bar. We donate a portion of our sales to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, an incredible charity that grants life-changing wishes to children with critical illnesses.
Standout jewelry pieces
Are you curious to discover which standout jewelry pieces Bulgari has to offer? We’ve shared a few of our favorite Bulgari jewelry pieces below, including their prices where possible.
B.zero1 Rock ring
Looking for a stylish way to flaunt your rebellious streak? You may feel an affinity with the edgy charm of the B.zero1 Rock ring.
This four-band ring, which features a stunning studded body, comes in various metals and accents to suit a range of tastes.
For example, there’s an 18k rose gold version with black ceramic accents ($2440) and an 18k yellow gold version with pavé diamond accents ($7500).
If a four-band ring sounds too thick, two-band versions are available for both of these rings, which are priced at $2090 and $6900, respectively.
If you’re after a ring that exudes a sense of femininity and whimsy, the 18k rose goldFiorever ring may be the ring for you.
The single flower version of the ring ($8500) features a substantially-sized four-petal flower adorned with pavé diamonds. The flower’s pistil is none other than a glistening diamond, which is very on-brand for Bulgari!
Interestingly, the two flower version of the ring is exactly half the price of the single flower version at $4250. It similarly features pavé diamond-adorned flower petals, but instead of a central diamond, it incorporates two round brilliant-cut diamonds.
As all of Bulgari’s engagement rings are exceedingly beautiful, we’ll admit that we had trouble choosing one to shine a spotlight on. But if wehad to choose, we love the understated elegance of the Incontro d'Amore, which is a platinum engagement ring with a round brilliant-cut diamond and a halo of pavé diamonds.
Bulgari doesn’t disclose the prices of their engagement rings, but based on the prices of their other jewelry pieces, they’re likely to be in the high tens of thousands of dollars … at least!
Bulgari’s necklaces are truly a sight to behold. We think that the Bvlgari Bvlgari necklace is the perfect example of how beautiful the brand’s necklaces are.
Bulgari describes it as an "effervescent and contemporary statement of sophistication."
It comes in at least three unique versions, all of which feature the Bvlgari Bvlgari collection’s iconic circular motif.
Two of the versions are made with 18k rose gold, one of which is set with mother-of-pearl elements and a round brilliant-cut diamond ($2960), while the other is set with full pavé diamonds on the pendant ($4000). The third version is made with 18k white gold and is set with full pavé diamonds on the pendant ($4200).
Divas’ Dream bangle
Luxurious and versatile, the Divas’ Dream bracelet ($5500) would look equally fitting adorning your wrist at a work function or a cocktail party.
Made with 18k rose gold, this head-turning bangle features mother-of-pearl and pavé diamond elements alongside one another. The striking contrast these two elements offer makes, in our opinion, the bangle a particularly captivating piece in the Divas’ Dream collection.
Bulgari Octo Finissimo watch
If you’ve been shopping around for a luxury men’s watch, you’ll have no doubt already come across the likes of the Zenith El Primero, Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak Collection, and Patek Philippe’s Aquanaut collection.
But have you ever set your eyes on a Bulgari watch?
Bulgari may not be the first name that springs to mind when you think of “luxury watches.” However, you may begin to understand the appeal of buying one once you learn about the brand’s premier watch, the Octo Finissimo watch.
While there are many types of Bulgari watches to choose from, the Octo Finissimo ($14,300) is arguably the most coveted of all.
Also referred to as the Octo Finissimo Automatic, this timepiece’s exquisite design and craftsmanship encapsulate Bulgari’s impeccable watchmaking skills.
It boasts a titanium case, case back, dial, and bracelet and a stainless steel folding clasp. With automatic movement and a hand-decorated côtes de Genève, chamfering, and perlage finishing, this watch offers superior functionality and style.
As you can imagine, Bulgari’s line of fragrances is just as refined as the brand’s other goods.
The brand has produced over one hundred men’s and women’s fragrances to date, with the range featuring a variety of eau de toilettes, eau de colognes, and eau de parfums. Distinctive and sophisticated floral notes characterize the fragrances.
Bulgari’s fragrances can be grouped into two categories. On one end of the spectrum are the brand’s stand-alone perfumes, such as the white musk- and rose-infused Rose Goldea Blossom Delight or the woody Bulgari Black. These perfumes are relatively accessible and reasonably priced.
On the other end are the perfumes that belong to Bulgari’s “High Perfumery Collection.” The perfumes in this collection are far more fanciful and exclusive. It’s no surprise that they come at eye-watering high prices, usually in excess of hundreds of dollars.
Bulgari Hotels and Resorts
While Bulgari is most well known for its jewelry, and to a lesser extent, its fragrances and accessories, the brand has also expanded into the realm of high-end hotels and resorts.
Bulgari’s hotels and resorts, called “Bvlgari Hotels & Resorts,” are a selection of ultra-luxurious properties located in six cities: Milan, London, Dubai, Bali, Beijing, and Shanghai.
Bvlgari Hotels & Resorts promises to provide guests with a “flawless” experience that’s “informal yet impeccable.”
The Bulgari Resort Bali is perhaps the most famous of the brand’s namesake hotels and resorts. Guests can enjoy sweeping beach and ocean views from their private Bvlgari Villa, as well as luxurious spa and dining experiences.
Bulgari vs. Bvlgari
Before we wrap things up, let’s talk about the elephant in the room. What’s the difference between Bulgari and Bvlgari?
If you’ve noticed these two similar but distinct spellings of the brand’s name, the good news is that no, your eyes aren’t playing up, and no, those aren’t typos all over your copy of Vogue!
The brand officially uses both names, but for different purposes.
The spelling “Bulgari” is used to refer to the company’s brand name or its product names. For example, Bulgari’s Octo Finissimo watch.
Whereas the spelling “Bvlgari” or “BVLGARI,” refers to the brand’s trademark. It features prominently on many of the brand’s jewelry pieces. For example, the logo BVLGARI is written across the B.zero1 bracelet.
So where does the spelling BVLGARI come from? Well, as you may recall, Bulgari is the founder’s last name. For stylistic effect, the letter “U” in the name has been substituted for the classical Latin alphabet equivalent, which is “V,” which together makes BVLGARI.
If you’re after stunning, exclusive, and high-end designer pieces and experiences and money is no object, Bulgari may be the brand for you.
The Italian designer brand has branched out into many areas, but it is still best known for its jewelry line. Bulgari jewelry is, above all, revered for its sophisticated designs and high-quality craftsmanship and materials.
The brand doesn’t spare any expenses to ensure their jewelry looks impeccable.
So it’s no wonder that those who appreciate the finer things in life find themselves drawn to Bulgari’s glamorous jewelry pieces.
And the rest of us?
The fact of the matter is that most of us won’t own a Bulgari jewelry piece in our lifetimes. The ultra-high price points make most of them accessible to only a select few.
Of course, you could always save up foryears to finally own your very own Bulgari jewelry piece.
But it may be wise to instead opt for a piece of jewelry from a reputable jewelry brand that won’t cost an arm and a leg.
At Blush and Bar, we’ve perfected the art of creating luxe-looking but affordable handmade jewelry pieces.
While Bulgari’s jewelry will set you back at least thousands of dollars (with more exclusive pieces priced well into the tens of thousands of dollars), most of our jewelry pieces can be picked up for less than $100.
