To raise money for their first production run, they launched a campaign on Indiegogo with a goal of $15,000. But instead of a few thousand dollars trickling in like most campaigns, they raised over $200,000.
In just three years, they had sold over 600,000 watches.
In 2018, theMovado Group bought MVMT. The Movado Group makes watches for several well-known brands, including Tommy Hilfiger, HUGO BOSS, Lacoste, and Coach.
Wondering what MVMT stands for? While the name might look like an acronym, it isn’t. In videos, the owners pronounce the brand “Movement.”
Up next, let’s look at the brand’s quality.
Is MVMT a good watch brand?
If you’re thinking about buying a MVMT watch, you probably want to know a little bit about the brand’s quality.
But that starts with expectations, so let’s take a broader look at the watch industry.

What kind of watch does MVMT sell?
MVMT isn’t competing against the high-end luxury watch market with brands like TAG Heuer, Rolex, or Breitling.
And they aren’t in the business of making bargain-priced timepieces either, like the Casio or Timex models you’ll find at Walmart.
Instead, they’re looking at the middle market—a classy, professional watch that would typically cost around $300. These sort of designer brands often manufacture their products cheaply, then add high margins.
MVMT aims to create stylish, millennial-focused watch designs for this market, then sell them directly to the consumer for half the price.
So, how do they stack up?
What mechanism do MVMT watches use?
It’s kind of ironic, but the movement in a MVMT watch isn’t anything special.
MVMT watches keep time with a Japanese Miyota Precision Quartz Movement. Miyota is a well-known and respected brand, and you can buy Miyota quartz movements online for around $10.
MVMT watches are mostly manufactured in Asia, which helps keep the price lower.
While “Made in China” might not be the seal of approval you’d hope for on a new watch, it’s the location of choice for brands around the same price range.
How long do MVMT watches last?
I’ve had my MVMT watch for five or six years now, and the watch itself has held up very well. Looking at it as most people would—the front of my wrist—you wouldn’t know that I’ve worn it five or six days a week for half a decade.
On the underside, however, the wear is a little more obvious. The leather band looks cracked, and the stitching has frayed around the edges.
It also shows a few places where I’ve accidentally scratched the leather over the years.

When the MVMT brand first launched, their focus was on minimalist, modern watch styles for men. That sleek design still drives the look and feel of their products today.
That said, since their original lineup of a few signature styles, MVMT today offers a wider variety of looks, including women’s watches (pictured).
If you shop for a MVMT watch today, you’ll see more attention-grabbing styles alongside the simple classics that built their brand.
MVMT has branched out into a few other products as well.
If you want to switch up your look quickly and easily, you can swap out a watch strap.
MVMT watches come with an elegant interlocking design that allows you to switch straps without any special tools.
The only downside of this is that MVMT straps only work with MVMT watches and vice versa.

MVMT has branched out into glasses as well.
They sell fashion sunglasses and blue light glasses with the brand name Everscroll.
Overall, the glasses are pretty high quality. They use cellulose acetate frames (the same material as Warby Parker), so they’re durable.
More recently, MVMT has started selling jewelry as well, both for men and women. As of this writing, they only sell 35 pieces, so it’s not their most important product.
(By comparison, they sell 279 watch styles.)
Like their watches, MVMT jewelry is simple and minimalistic. Each piece has an attractive design that fits nicely with the brand’s aesthetic.
Unfortunately, there’s very little information about what materials they use to make the pieces. A few say stainless steel, but most just list silver, gold, and rose gold as “colors.”
There’s no indication the pieces contain any precious metal.
Their jewelry isn’t expensive, but you could buy a piece made of hypoallergenic precious metal, like gold vermeil—sterling silver covered in 18k gold—for the same price. (Our specialty here at Blush and Bar.)
Overall, MVMT’s jewelry selection isn’t too impressive. The designs are excellent, but it’s hard to know what you’re buying with so few details.
In writing this review, I didn’t just rely on my own experience. I also read dozens of customer reviews online. My experience has been great, but what do other people think?
In general, people are happy with their watches. If they have problems, customer service usually is quick and kind in making things better.
Negative reviews focus mostly on policies, like refund deadlines or phone support hours, not the employees themselves. That said, people mentioned a few common problems.
Hard-to-change orders.Apparently, MVMT finalizes all online orders within 15 minutes. Customer service has been unable to help people who want to cancel or change their order later. The only solution is to wait for the watch to arrive, then apply for a refund.
Shipping problems. It’s hard to tell whether this is a problem with the postal service or MVMT, but there have been a handful of lost, delayed, or misrouted packages.
Missing refunds. While most reviewers get refunds promptly, there are a few instances where refunds never seem to happen. Without the whole story, it’s hard to tell why, but it looks like most people who request refunds don’t have any problems.
Glasses size. A few times, customers have received glasses that are too small. If you order MVMT glasses, be sure to check the size carefully to avoid applying for a refund.
Poor quality. Some customers complain of the watches breaking or scratching. I’m sure there are duds, but I’ve never had a single scratch on my MVMT watch face in over five years—and it’s brushed against concrete and brick walls at least a few times.
Is it worth buying MVMT?
If you’re thinking about buying a MVMT watch, you must base the decision on your frame of reference.
Let’s look at a few different scenarios and see what makes the most sense for you.
If you’re comparing MVMT to a premium watch, you’re looking at the wrong brand.
Most luxury watch aficionados—the kind of people who understand and appreciate the details of a Rolex—would never buy a MVMT watch.
A luxury watch has a high resale value due to its precious metals and precise mechanics. It will also be incredibly durable (think diving or rock climbing) and will last generations.
MVMT watches—and most timepieces under $2,000—can’t compare because of their common materials, quartz movements, and affordable manufacturing.
I want the cheapest watch that looks good
If your main focus is the price, you can find better deals elsewhere.
A MVMT watch probably costs around $20–50 to make, and you can find knock-off brands for around that price point.
You’ll be taking a bit of a risk—knockoff brands are notorious for terrible quality—but might find a great deal. It depends on your luck, but MVMT is not the cheapest option.
I want an Instagram-worthy watch from a known brand
If you’re looking for a trustworthy, stylish watch that will turn heads, MVMT is probably a great fit.
Compared to similar watches, you’ll save around 50%.
For example, I’ve worn my MVMT watch over a thousand times. At $150, that puts it at 15 cents per day—very affordable for a great-looking timepiece.
And MVMT also has unique minimalist designs you can’t find with a lot of other brands.
Where to buy MVMT watches
MVMT originally sold their watches exclusively through their website.
As the company has grown, however, you can now find their watches in many other retailers. MVMT has a deal with various brick-and-mortar stores and also sells its products online on websites like Amazon.
There are more watch brands than you can count.
If you’re looking for a classic and stylish brand with a timeless look and an affordable price point, MVMT watches are a good option.
They’re neither the best nor worst quality, but they’re stylish and have brand-name recognition that’s hard to buy at this price.
I’ve owned a MVMT watch for over five years and have never had any problems. Most reviewers online have had similar experiences.
Overall, MVMT is an excellent buy if it fits your style and budget.
