Vogue magazine began in 1892 as a weekly New York newspaper publication. As of 2021, there are now 26 international editions of the magazine. The word vogue means fashionable or popular, which explains why it was chosen as the magazine’s name!
The magazine was founded by Arthur Baldwin Turnure and targeted New York’s upper-class men, primarily covering their fashion and lifestyle. It was only in 1909 when Condé Montrose Nast purchased the magazine that it was targeted toward women and women’s fashion.
Initially, the magazine cover was illustrated by artists, but eventually, this was replaced by cover photography. Many a Vogue issue has been celebrated for its cover. As of December 2020, only 10 men have been featured on a Vogue cover (the most recent being Harry Styles).
The magazine itself only became a monthly issue in 1973, along with various stylistic changes under the then Vogue editor Grace Mirabella. In 1988, the current editor-in-chief of the magazine, Anna Wintour, took over.
Vogue still produces its monthly issue print magazine. They also have an online publication featuring sections for fashion, beauty, bridal, culture, celebrity, and Vogue living. They still stick relatively close to their roots covering the fashion industry, including focusing on the latest trends in high fashion.
Every issue is an exhibition of high-fashion designer clothes, makeup, hair, and style. A magazine subscription will set you back $12 for the first year and $24.99 every year thereafter in the US. This magazine subscription gets you an issue in print delivered to your door, a Vogue Phone Wallet, and immediate access to Vogue digitally.
There is also the Vogue app which allows you to view stories, photos, and videos that are published on Vogue.com. Content will be recommended based on your preferences, and you’ll be notified when new stories or breaking news are released. You can even save stories you’d like to read later!
Some people claim that the introduction of social media has seriously affected magazine sales and fashion more generally.
Once upon a time, the latest trends might’ve been set by biannual fashion shows—that’s simply not the case anymore. With Instagrammers, bloggers, and celebrities on social media, trends in fashion are much harder to cover in a monthly issue.
So is a Vogue subscription worth it? Let’s see what subscribers think.
To find out what subscribers think about Vogue, we took a look at a few review sites.
Influenster.com features 463 reviews for the magazine with an average rating of 4.6 out of 5 stars. Seventy-six percent of reviews are five stars. Sitejabber, on the other hand, has an average rating of 4.04 out of 5 stars from 100 reviews. They rank the magazine as second among all magazines reviewed on their website.
Reading the reviews shows that the thing most people enjoy about the magazine is getting inspiration from the fashion editorials. Vogue’s use of beautiful fashion photography seems to be another source of love for the magazine.
If you’re a fashionista, clothes designer, or general fashion enthusiast, then Vogue could be perfect for you. With the magazine covering all the latest styles and upcoming fashion trends, you’ll never have to worry about being out of vogue again.
Most subscribers tend to agree that a magazine subscription is worth the money. The use of beautiful cover photography, internal fashion photography, and excellent fashion industry coverage are three main reasons that this is some people’s favorite magazine.
Some criticisms of the magazine are that it can be out-of-touch because it can’t keep up with today’s fast-paced world. With many latest trends being set by influencers on social media, it’s much harder for a monthly issue magazine to stay on top of the latest styles.
But, with an online blog (and plenty of other online content), a physical, monthly magazine, and an app to boot, Vogue seems to be keeping up just fine.
